Spring has arrived, bringing a familiar challenge for Lubbock residents: itchy eyes, sneezing, and congestion as allergy season ramps up. Experts are sounding the alarm that 2025 is poised to be a challenging year for seasonal allergies, as pollen levels are anticipated to reach new heights.
As AccuWeather meteorologist Alan Reppert noted, Texas is set to experience record-high levels of tree, grass, and weed pollen. The season for tree pollen is already underway, reaching its peak in early April, with grass pollen expected to rise significantly from May through July. However, the most challenging times could arise in late summer, particularly when weed pollen levels surge, especially if Lubbock faces a tumultuous hurricane season.
According to climate experts, including those from Climate Central, extended growing seasons and increasing temperatures lead to more intense and prolonged allergy seasons. In the United States, almost 87% of cities examined have experienced increasingly severe allergy seasons since the 1970s.
Experts advise preparing for an incoming pollen surge. Lubbock residents with allergies need to monitor pollen forecasts, ensure they have plenty of antihistamines on hand, and minimize time spent outdoors when pollen levels are highest. For individuals experiencing severe symptoms, utilizing air purifiers and receiving allergy shots can provide significant relief.
As spring bursts into life, Lubbock residents are gearing up for what promises to be one of the most challenging allergy seasons in recent memory.
