Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff and a global figure admired for his humility and progressive tone, died on Monday at the age of 88. His funeral will be held Saturday, April 26, in St. Peter’s Square, drawing leaders and mourners from around the world — including many Catholics from Texas, where his message of compassion and inclusion deeply resonated.

Texans, particularly Hispanic Catholics and social justice advocates, often saw Francis as a pope who understood their struggles. From his embrace of migrants and the poor to his call for climate action and economic equity, many faith leaders in the state say his papacy energized younger, more diverse generations of Catholics.

“He reminded us that faith isn’t about judgment — it’s about love, mercy, and standing with the marginalized,” said a Houston-area priest reflecting on Francis’s impact.

Francis was no stranger to Texas headlines. His sharp criticism of border walls — seen as a swipe at former President Trump’s immigration policy — sparked both praise and backlash across the state. In 2016, he said anyone building walls instead of bridges “is not Christian,” igniting national debate.

Though his reforms stirred controversy, especially among conservatives, his Texas supporters point to his pastoral approach. He opened dialogue on LGBTQ+ inclusion, allowed women greater participation in church roles, and condemned the death penalty — all issues that resonated with many Catholics across the Lone Star State.

As the Vatican prepares for his funeral, Texans join the world in mourning a pope who dared to challenge the Church — and the world — to show more grace.
