Residents of Lubbock are being warned that strong thunderstorms may happen Tuesday night and are being asked to get ready ahead of time. The prediction from the Office of Emergency Management includes the chance of strong winds, heavy rain, hail, and even a few tornadoes.

People in the city are told to stay up to date on the weather by signing up for LBKAlert, following the National Weather Service's updates, and knowing the difference between a watch and a warning. A watch means that stormy weather is likely to happen, while a warning means that bad weather is happening or will happen soon.

Some suggestions for being ready include making an emergency plan, finding safe places to stay, securing outdoor things, and practicing pet safety. People are also told to stock up on important supplies in case they need to stay put during a power outage or a shelter-in-place situation.

To make people safer, the 30/30 Lightning Rule is reminded: if you see lightning and then hear thunder in less than 30 seconds, you should go inside right away.

Storms that produce hail at least ¾ of an inch across, winds over 58 mph, or tornadoes are considered severe. There are more than 100,000 thunderstorms in the U.S. every year, and 10% of them are considered dangerous. People in Lubbock are being told to take action right away to lower their risk.

Lubbock, stay safe and up to date.
