Lubbock Public Health has announced that avian flu was discovered in a dead bird in the city. As of Friday, officials reported no human virus cases in Lubbock.

Because of this discovery, LPH and Lubbock Animal Services (LAS) advise people not to touch dead animals. They recommend calling LAS at 806-775-2057 or using the MyLBK app to request a removal.

Avian flu, also known as H5N1, is a virus that spreads among birds, cows, and other animals. While it's rare, it can sometimes affect people. The Cleveland Clinic says the virus spreads through contact with fluids from a sick animal, including spit, breathing droplets, milk, and feces. It can also spread by taking in dust from infected areas or by touching infected fluids and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.

Health experts recommend the following steps to reduce the risk of exposure:

  • Wear safety gear when working with farm animals.
  • Wash your hands regularly.
  • Avoid sick animals or any that may have been near bird flu.
  • Don’t drink or touch raw milk.

The finding of bird flu in Lubbock is similar to other cases of the virus reported across the country. The CDC has reported one human case of bird flu in Texas. However, there is no evidence that it is spreading to people in Lubbock.Officials suggest that people stay aware and follow safety rules to prevent possible contact.
