After pleading guilty to manslaughter, a 22-year-old Lubbock man was sentenced to 10 years probation for negligently shooting and murdering his companion over two years ago.
In court Thursday, Adrian Garcia and his attorney, Kris Espino, accepted a Lubbock County District Attorney's plea deal. Under the arrangement, Garcia will serve 10 years on community supervision for a second-degree felony offense that could have resulted in two to 20 years in prison. Violation of probation might result in 10 years in prison.
Garcia was charged with manslaughter after Lubbock police responded to a shots fired complaint at a home in the 2300 block of 143rd Street around 4 a.m. on Oct. 8, 2022. Dylan Montes, 17, was found shot in the front yard by officers. He died at University Medical Center after being taken there.
Garcia pulled out a gun and shot Montes in a shed behind the home, according to a police report. A spent shell case, live rounds, a loaded magazine, and drug paraphernalia were located in the shed, but the cause is unknown.
A public search for Garcia followed his January 2023 manslaughter indictment. He turned himself in six hours later.
Garcia must serve 30 days of weekend shock prison time as part of his plea deal. One child died and another was forever changed by careless gun use.
