The measles outbreak in Texas' South Plains and Panhandle regions has exceeded 300 cases, with Gaines County reporting 211 infections, as stated by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

As of March 21, measles has been confirmed in 14 counties, indicating a swift escalation since the outbreak started in January 2025. Gaines County continues to be the most affected region, with 20 new cases reported recently, while Lubbock County has documented eight cases, including three new infections.

Health officials have confirmed that there are 40 hospitalizations linked to the outbreak. Sadly, one child has lost their life due to complications associated with the virus, representing the first death in the current crisis.

Public health officials persist in advocating for vaccination and increased precautions, especially in schools and childcare environments, where the virus has the potential to spread swiftly. DSHS collaborates with local health departments to manage the outbreak and avert additional infections.

As measles cases continue to increase, officials emphasize the critical need for immunization to prevent further transmission, particularly in vulnerable communities.
