Over the weekend, Burly and LaFern Bigham, a couple from Lubbock, commemorated an extraordinary milestone: 72 years of marriage. The couple celebrated the occasion with joy, reflecting on a lifetime of shared memories and affection, surrounded by their extensive family of over 80 members.
Burly and Fern's love narrative began in high school in Lefors, Texas. They initially encountered each other when Fern relocated to the area as a freshman, and they began dating as juniors. On October 11, 1952, they exchanged vows following their graduation. In the late 1950s, they relocated to Lubbock, where they established a family that has since expanded.
"It has been wonderful, you know, to be this old... The photograph above is of our entire family." So, I am simply grateful for having reached this point," Burly stated.
Fern shared the secret to their success, which is open communication, as their journey has not always been simple, similar to any long-term marriage. "I would become enraged with him over a particular issue, and subsequently engage in a conversation with him in order to resolve the matter." She stated, "You are unable to harbor resentments."
The Bighams have at present five children, 16 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and an increasing number of great-great-grandchildren. Fern is genuinely grateful for the blessings she has received, stating, "I desired a large family, and the Lord granted me that wish."
The couple's legacy, which their family will cherish for generations to come, is the result of their enduring love and resilience.
