With Lubbock projected to hit 84°F on Tuesday—flirting with historical records—Texas is getting ready for a surge of unusually warm temperatures this week. The National Weather Service states that dry conditions and strong winds will increase wildfire hazards all across the area.
The Lubbock Monday high already exceeds past records at 86°F. Nearby towns, including Childress, are also seeing highs in the 80s. The pleasant stretch lasts until Wednesday when temperatures peak at 82°F before gently declining on Thursday. Highs will calm down into the mid-70s throughout the weekend and drop into the upper 50s by Sunday.
Overnight lows in the 40s will provide some respite even with the afternoon heat. Meanwhile, residents are advised to keep hydrated, restrict outdoor activity during extreme temperatures, and stay alert for possible fire threats. Dry conditions combined with brisk winds might increase the fire threat over West Texas.
Forecasters see a change by the weekend as a cooling trend takes temperatures closer to seasonal norms, even if the warmth will last a few more days.
