Texas Tech football has added defensive tackle Skyler Gill-Howard to the roster via the transfer portal, bolstering the defensive interior for the upcoming season. The Matador Club, Texas Tech's NIL collective, confirmed the transfer on social media Saturday.
Gill-Howard, a 6-foot-1, 285-pound lineman, provides experience and skill to the Red Raiders with one season of eligibility remaining. The Milwaukee native began his college career at Upper Iowa before moving to Northern Illinois, where he spent three seasons.
This season, Gill-Howard had a massive impact for the Huskies, registering 52 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and five sacks. His efforts earned him third-team all-MAC accolades, capping off a stellar season following minimal participation in 2022 and a backup role in 2023. One of his season highlights was making four tackles in Northern Illinois' shock victory against Notre Dame.
Texas Tech concentrated on skill positions during its early transfer portal activity but now focuses on improving the defensive line. The signing of Gill-Howard will provide the Red Raiders with extra depth and playmaking ability on defense.
As the offseason proceeds, Texas Tech continues to assemble a roster that will compete at the highest level in the next season.
