LUBBOCK, Texas— The Parks and Recreation Department, Water Utilities maintenance staff, and an external drilling crew collaborated to install a new public artwork in Lubbock titled "Friendly Cowboy Western String Band."

The artist desired that the sculptures be displayed together at Avenue O and Mac Davis Lane, and Civic Lubbock Inc. provided the funding for their acquisition.

The artist's preference for a unified display was underscored by Jacqueline Bober, the Municipal Museums Director, who explained that Civic Lubbock Inc. coordinated the purchase and site selection.

The artist's inspiration for each statue was derived from folk art figurines created by his grandfather. Each stands 12 feet tall and weighs over 1,100 pounds.

The arc forms of the statues were modeled after these smaller sculptures, which were traditionally crafted from horseshoe nails, as noted by the artist Gilbert. Initially, the four statues were dispersed throughout Lubbock; however, Gilbert requested that they be consolidated in order to emphasize the city's extensive musical heritage.

Gilbert emphasized the cultural importance of the installation, stating that Lubbock is a significant music hub and that numerous musicians have originated from the area.

The city has created an interactive map that displays various artworks, including Gilbert's sculptures, to increase public engagement with local art.

The map is scheduled to receive revisions soon. This initiative aims to enhance Lubbock's cultural landscape by promoting the exploration of artistic offerings and fostering an appreciation for public art among residents and visitors.
