On Monday, the Lubbock Police Department conducted a moving ceremony to commemorate seven officers who gave their lives in the course of duty. The department's headquarters are now adorned with exquisitely crafted plaques, a permanent tribute to these champions. The event was the occasion for their unveiling.
The ceremony opened with a prayer and traditional music, establishing a solemn yet inspiring atmosphere. Seth Herman, the Lubbock Police Chief, addressed the attendees, reflecting on the sentimental relevance of the day. "It strikes quite close to home. And the fact that we’ve had seven of our own perished in the line of duty is significant," he stated.
Mayor Mark McBrayer reiterated this sentiment, assuring families that the city will never forget their loved ones.
Officer Nicholas Lee Reyna, Sergeant Kevin Cox, Officer Rodney Kendricks, Sergeant Kenneth (K.D.) Fowler, Detective Larry Jack Stevens, Detective Ralph Clayton White, and Officer Julio Herrera are honored as fallen officers. Their names are now inscribed in stone outside police headquarters, serving as a testament to their commitment and courage.
Chief Herman underscored the ongoing dedication of law enforcement: "As long as there is evil in the world, there will be individuals who are willing to stand in the way of good and evil." He recognized the profound loss experienced by families, stating, "Unfortunately, none of the family members present signed up for the ceremony that we are participating in today."
The ceremony, which was attended by the families and acquaintances of the deceased officers, distributed retired plaques as tokens of remembrance. Mayor McBrayer reiterated that the community will cherish the recollections of these officers.
