As winter temperatures draw near, Lubbock Fire Rescue (LFR) is urging residents to be aware of the fire risks linked to space heaters and is providing essential safety tips to avoid accidents. Many individuals rely on space heaters for warmth during the colder months; however, improper usage can result in hazardous fires.
LFR recommends maintaining a distance of at least three feet between space heaters and flammable materials like curtains, furniture, or bedding to ensure safety. It is essential to avoid plugging space heaters into extension cords, as this can lead to overload and overheating. Space heaters need to be positioned on flat, stable surfaces to avoid tipping over, and it is advisable to select models that include an automatic shut-off feature in case they are accidentally knocked over.
Alongside space heater safety, firefighter Blake Ball warned about the seasonal hazards associated with Christmas trees, particularly live ones. “A dry tree is highly combustible,” he cautioned. Ensuring the tree remains hydrated and providing a steady water supply can help mitigate fire hazards linked to holiday decorations.
By adhering to these safety tips, residents of Lubbock can ensure their homes remain warm and secure this winter, while steering clear of fire hazards.
