Lubbock, Texas (AP)—Jason Corley and Jordan Rackler, Lubbock County Commissioners, were absent from an additional court meeting on Monday, which prevented the county's property tax rate and budget for the forthcoming fiscal year from being voted on.
Corley and Rackler postponed a vote on the county's proposed property tax rate and budget by failing to attend a critical meeting on Monday. However, their absence could result in the automatic implementation of the no-new-revenue tax rate.
The no-new-revenue rate is being advocated for by the commissioners, as it would prevent any tax increase.
Rackler, who live-streamed the meeting on Facebook, pledged to postpone a tax increase. "Do you have any knowledge of the tax rate in Lubbock County?" We will maintain our position with determination," he declared.
The proposed budget could be reduced by $7.5 million, which would have an impact on public services if the county were to implement the no-new-revenue rate in the absence of Corley and Rackler, as warned by Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish.
"We’ve worked on this budget all summer to meet the county's needs," Parrish indicated. "For about $20 a year on a $100,000 home, we could ensure better law enforcement and infrastructure."In spite of the commissioners' absence, their supporters were present at the meeting to defend their decision.
The decision must be made by the county by the end of the month. Parrish continues to harbour optimism for a resolution.
