The Lubbock Police Department (LPD) is encouraging parents to teach their children about the correct use of 911, highlighting its significance during emergencies. Officer Tony Leal from LPD urged parents to engage in role-playing different scenarios to assist children in differentiating between genuine emergencies and less critical situations.

“Discussing various scenarios with your child regarding what constitutes an emergency and what does not aids in their comprehension of the distinction,” Leal explained.

Local mother Stephanie Turner, a parent of four, concurred that initiating this dialogue early is essential. “Making them comfortable with calling 911 is crucial, beginning when they are old enough to understand and maintaining that conversation as they mature,” Turner stated.

LPD highlighted the importance of children being aware of crucial information such as their address and phone number, as dispatchers will request these details during a call. They also assured parents that children should always feel comfortable calling 911 if they are uncertain about the situation. Dispatchers are skilled in asking the essential questions to identify the suitable response.

“When a child calls 911, it’s wise to prioritize safety,” Leal said. “Dispatchers are able to provide guidance and assess whether the situation necessitates police, fire, or EMS services.”

Parents should promote an open conversation regarding emergencies to enable children to respond with confidence when necessary.
