A 16-year-old from Lubbock was arrested Monday afternoon after leading Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers on a high-speed chase in a stolen car.
DPS said the chase started around 1:21 p.m. when Troopers saw a 2018 Hyundai Elantra that had been stolen from Hobbs, New Mexico. When police tried to stop the car, the driver refused to stop and sped through north Lubbock to get away.
During the chase, the stolen car hit another car at the corner of 4th and Frankfort. Luckily, no one was hurt. The pursuit continued until the driver lost control and slammed into a light pole in the 300 block of North Slide, putting the chase to an end.
The 16-year-old driver was arrested and taken to the Lubbock County Juvenile Justice Center for using a car without permission and trying to escape from police.
A 17-year-old girl was in the car during the incident, but she was not taken into custody. DPS officials confirmed she was let go at the location.
The authorities are still looking into the incident.
