LUBBOCK COUNTY, Texas – According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), a 16-year-old from Joshua, Texas, was pronounced deceased after attempting to elude arrest in a stolen vehicle on US Highway 87 early Sunday morning.

A 2018 Hyundai reported stolen from Burleson, Texas, was the subject of a routine traffic stop by a Garza County Sheriff's Office deputy on US Highway 84 near Southland at approximately 7:00 a.m. Law enforcement was drawn into a high-speed pursuit as the driver attempted to escape the scene in the stolen vehicle.

The motorist lost control of the vehicle while exiting US Highway 84, just east of Slaton in Lubbock County, at approximately 7:30 a.m. The automobile was unable to negotiate a turnaround beneath a viaduct, subsequently deviated from the roadway, collided with a flatbed train car, and ignited.
