As the measles outbreak in Texas continues to spread, Lubbock Public Health is setting up free vaccination clinics to prevent people from contracting the highly contagious virus. On Friday, the Texas Department of State Health Services had heard of 146 cases in nine Panhandle and South Plains counties. Texas also reported that a child in Lubbock had died from measles.

Head of Lubbock Public Health, Katherine Wells said, "Measles is very, very contagious." "About 90% of the people in our community have been vaccinated, but those who haven't are at risk."

Lubbock Public Health is holding free measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine clinics at 2015 50th St. to prevent the disease from spreading further. The clinics will be open Wednesday to Friday, March 4- 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and from 1 to 3 p.m. on the weekend, March 8 and 9.

Vaccines will be given away for free, and you don't need to make an appointment. Health officials say that people unsure if they have been vaccinated should talk to their doctor. For more information, call 806-775-2933 or go to mylubbock.us/vaccine.
