This weekend, Lubbock and the surrounding areas will go from spring-like warmth to the grip of winter as a cold front brings high winds, light snow, and protracted sub-freezing temperatures.

Today's highs will be roughly 15 degrees above average, accompanied by westerly winds rising to 25 to 35 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. Effectively from 11 AM to 6 PM CST, the National Weather Service has issued a WIND advisory for the area.

Conditions tonight will be chilly. Clear skies and breezy weather will bring temperatures either close to or somewhat below normal.

In Lubbock, wind chills should drop into the tee on Saturday morning. In the northwest, they might fall into the single digits.

With wind chills in the teens and twenties, Saturday's highs will peak about midday. Late Saturday marks a second cold air surge that can bring light snow, mainly in the northern viewing area. If snow falls, northern areas should expect small quantities; up to an inch is likely here near Lubbock.

Saturday night until midday Tuesday marks the projected coldest part of the season thus far. Saturday night's temperatures will dip below 32°F and stay there until Tuesday afternoon.

The extreme cold calls on Sunday and Monday were First Alert Weather Days. Lubbock homeowners should ensure exterior pipes and plants are covered, prepare for freezing temperatures, and use caution on icy roadways.

Follow the First Alert weather team for updates on the changing projection and wintertime safety measures.
