Early Monday morning, a strong cold front came through the area. It brought a significant temperature drop and stopped the unusually hot weather over the weekend. Today's highs will stay in the 60s and low 70s in the afternoon. This is a big drop from Sunday's highs in the 90s.
The gusty winds that came with the front will slowly die down after sunset, and overnight, they will move easterly. The wind will pick up a bit, but it should still be strong enough to keep nighttime lows in the 40s and low 50s across the area. A blanket of clouds is expected to form overnight, keeping the temperature from dropping even more.
Some weather models show a slight chance of convective activity near the southern edges of the region late tonight. This could be caused by the cold front's following edge. However, any thunderstorms that do form are likely to stay outside the main watching area.
The high temperatures for Tuesday will be around the same as they were on Monday, in the 60s and 70s. The local weather will be affected by the surface high pressure over Oklahoma, which will keep the easterly to southeasterly winds going and strengthen the cooler air mass.
The area will start to warm up again on Wednesday, with highs going back to the 80s and maybe even the low 90s by Thursday. As the week goes on, the usual Texas sun will replace the short spring chill.
Forecasters look forward to the weekend and think rains may happen, especially in places off the Caprock. It's too early to say how bad it will get, but people should keep an eye on new forecasts as the week progresses.
Enjoy the change for now because it won't last long.
