The Lubbock Independent School District (LISD) Board of Trustees is slated to debate on planned school closures and consolidations during a special session on Wednesday, attempting to alleviate the district’s $14.8 million budget imbalance.

The gathering, planned for 6 p.m. in the LISD administrative office, will focus on proposals from the district’s "Future Focus Committee," a 100-member panel tasked with exploring solutions to the financial issue.

During a packed Nov. 21 meeting, district officials proposed shutting Overton Elementary, with kids and staff transitioning to Rush Elementary; redistributing O.L. Slaton Middle School pupils to Atkins and Dunbar middle schools; and moving Hodges Elementary children to a new campus. Bean Elementary, initially included in phase one consolidations, has now been withdrawn from the urgent recommendations.

If authorized, these modifications might take effect as early as the following school year. However, specifics still need to be made clear on where Hodges Elementary pupils would be placed.

“These decisions are difficult but necessary as we navigate financial challenges,” LISD leaders noted during the November session. The planned adjustments aim to minimize operational expenses while maintaining educational quality for affected students.

Community reactions have been divided, with some voicing concerns about the impact of closures on families and neighborhoods while others accept the financial need for the measures.

The board’s vote on these recommendations might signify a dramatic shift for LISD, echoing broader issues faced by districts struggling with enrollment losses and budget restrictions.
